The Missing Cool Corona in the Flat Magnetic Field around Solar Active Regions

چکیده

SDO/AIA images the full solar disk in several EUV bands that are each sensitive to coronal plasma emissions of one or more specific temperatures. We observe when isolated active regions (ARs) on disk, full-disk some channels show outskirts AR as a dark moat surrounding AR. Here we present seven examples, selected from time periods there was only single disk. Visually, be most prominent AIA 171 Angstrom band, which has sensitivity emission at log10 T = 5.8. By examining 1D line-of-sight measure temperature distribution found six channels, find intensity depressed over range ~ 5.7 - 6.2 for cases. argue exists because pressure strong magnetic field splays out presses down underlying loops, flattening those loops -- along with lowest AR's own low altitude. Those would normally emit bulk emission, restricted heights above surface too have Angstrom-emitting plasmas sustained them, according Antiochos & Noci (1986), while hotter EUV-emitting overlying higher-altitude long AR-rooted loops. This potentially explains low-coronal-temperature moats ARs.

The Magnetic Field of the Solar Corona from Pulsar Observations

Abstract. We present a novel experiment with the capacity to independently measure both the electron density and the magnetic field of the solar corona. We achieve this through measurement of the excess Faraday rotation due to propagation of the polarised emission from a number of pulsars through the magnetic field of the solar corona. This method yields independent measures of the integrated e...

The Magnetic Classification of Solar Active Regions

The purpose of this letter is to address a blind-spot in our knowledge of solar active region statistics. To the best of our knowledge there are no published results showing the variation of the Mount Wilson magnetic classifications as a function of solar cycle based on modern observations. We show statistics for all active regions reported in the daily Solar Region Summary from 1992 January 1 ...

Magnetic field inclination and atmospheric oscillations above solar active regions

Recent observational evidence for magnetic field direction effects on helioseismic signals in sunspot penumbrae is suggestive of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mode conversion occurring at lower levels. This possibility is explored using wave mechanical and ray theory in a model of the Sun’s surface layers permeated by uniform inclined magnetic field. It is found that fastto-slow conversion near the...

Magnetic Relaxation in the Solar Corona

This is a mathematical study of the long-lived hydromagnetic structures produced in the tenuous solar corona by the turbulent, resistive relaxation of a magnetic field under the condition of extremely high electrical conductivity. The relaxation theory of Taylor (1974), originally developed for a laboratory device, is extended to treat the open atmosphere where the relaxing field must interact ...

Vertical Lorentz Force and Cross-field Currents in the Photospheric Magnetic Fields of Solar Active Regions

We demonstrate that the vertical Lorentz force and a corresponding lower limit of the cross-field electric current density can be calculated from vector magnetograms of solar active regions obtained at a single height in the solar atmosphere, provided that the vertical gradient of the magnetic field strength is known at this height. We use a predicted vertical magnetic field gradient derived fr...
